Institute of Public Affairs -Net Zero Report-June 2025

The ten per cent tariff that the Trump administration has imposed on Australian exports to the United States is nothing compared to the economic impediments that we, as a nation, have imposed on ourselves through our commitment to the policy of net zero by 2050.

In fact, because of the emission intensity of Australia’s exports – and our economy as a whole – net zero and its associated policies, together, form the most significant threat to our trade viability.

Since the announcement of Australia’s net zero commitment, Australia’s economic productivity and per capita growth have markedly declined.New research by the Institute of Public Affairs finds that, since the Albanese federal government came into office, it has not only doubled down on the net zero commitment of the Morrison government, but also constructed key pillars of net zero, embedded in statutory law, all of which will need to be toppled if we are to halt our economic decline.

In our new research report, From Bad Idea to Bad Laws: The Five Pillars of Net Zero, my colleagues, Research Director Morgan Begg and Research Fellow Saxon Davidson, and I identified the following five key impediments to our economic development:

The Climate Change Act;
The Safeguard Mechanism;
The Future Made in Australia Policy;
The New Vehicle Efficiency Standard; and
The Large-scale Renewable Energy Target.
Only after these pillars, which prop up the flawed net zero ideology, have been removed, will it be possible to properly and effectively abandon the absurdity of net zero emissions by 2050 to bring our economy back on the right track.
